Automotive Clearcoat Finishing

clearcoat finishingThe following information is designed as a starting point when repairing clearcoat defects such as dirt, orange peel and runs. Final grit selection may be changed to meet specific application requirements. Abralon should be used wet.

Step One: Sand surface to be repaired using Royal Micro 1200 or 1500 grit wet or dry. Use interface pad 1066F and a short-stroke DA sander such as Mirka's MR-6. Place sander on the part before starting. Using moderate pressure, level sand the surface. Keep area being sanded to a minimum.

Step Two: Finish repair using Abralon 2000 grit. Abralon must be used wet. Place sander on the part before starting. Using moderate pressure, feather the leveled area to match the sheen of the surrounding surface. Abralon will remove the grit marks and bring the finish of the repair area to the desired gloss level. For ultimate gloss, repeat with Abralon 4000 grit.

Step Three: Restore gloss to match surrounding panel area using Mirka's Polarshine polish.

Note: Using the correct sanding procedures and choosing the appropriate Abralon grit will produce a repair with no defects and a matched finish. On large repairs, Abralon may be used on the whole panel for uniformity. Repair procedures may vary depending on the type and thickness of clearcoats.
