Topcoat Repair

clearcoat finishingThe following information is designed as a starting point when repairing topcoat defects such as drips, runs or sags. Final grit selection may be changed to meet specific application requirements. Abralon should be used with a lubricant.

Step One: Level the defect using Royal Micro 1500 grit Apply a small amount of petroleum based lubricant on the area of the defect. Place sander on the part before starting. Using moderate pressure, level the defect. Keep area being sanded to a minimum.

Step Two: Finish repair using Abralon 1000 grit Apply a small amount of petroleum based lubricant on the area of the defect. Place sander on the part before starting. Using moderate pressure, feather the leveled area to match the sheen of the surrounding surface. Abralon will remove the grit marks and bring the finish of the repair area to the desired gloss level.

Note: Using the correct sanding procedures and choosing the appropriate Abralon grit will produce a repaired unit with no defects and a matched finish. On large repairs, Abralon may be used on the whole part for uniformity. Repair procedures will vary depending on the type and thickness of topcoats.
